The rattan stick is one of many sticks used by comrades in Uncle Ho's Security Guard Team: "Truong, Ky, Khang, Chien, Nhat, Dinh, Thang, Loi" made from rattan trees of Viet Bac mountains and forests for Uncle Ho to use when passing through forests and streams during the years he lived in the Viet Bac war zone during the resistance war against the French between 1947 and 1954. Professor and Academician Nguyen Khanh Toan at that time was Secretary of the Party Union, Deputy Minister of National Education, who regularly met, exchanged and reported on the educational work with President Ho Chi Minh in the Viet Bac war zone. Knowing that Mr. Nguyen Khanh Toan had to often cross forests, streams and passes, Uncle Ho gave him one of the sticks that Uncle Ho often used so he could easily travel in the forests. He used the stick that Uncle Ho gave him when he lived in Viet Bac. After the peace was restored, even though he no longer used the stick, he still kept it carefully. After the Professor passed away, his family placed the rattan stick given to him by Uncle Ho next to the Professor's photo for worship. On September 30, 2006, Mrs. Dao Ngoc Bich, the professor's wife, donated the stick to the Ho Chi Minh Museum of Thua Thien Hue.
This is an artifact showing the Great Leader's deep concern for the resistance soldiers. Furthermore, Uncle Ho giving the stick to Mr. Nguyen Khanh Toan also indicates Uncle Ho’s deep affection for Mr. Toan personally. The stick is a priceless souvenir that encouraged him to overcome difficulties and strive to fulfill all the tasks assigned by the Party and Uncle Ho.
